Visualize
a · to see or form a mental image of
b · to make perceptible to the mind or imagination
c · form a mental picture of something that is invisible or abstract
A mountaineer looking up at Mt. Whitney doesn’t just approach the climb. The days before, as they set out to pack their packs and gather their gear, they create images of the experience. Then, looking through guide books, they will visualize themself on the arête setting up their belay stations safely and making the final moves to ascend to the top. As a former ski racer, much of my time was spent visualizing. Whether it was race day or training, visualization was an integral part of enhancing performance.
Habits
Habits don’t come out of anywhere. To create a habit, we must have thought about that habit, whether it’s positive and healthy or destructive. For example, putting on the coffee pot first thing in the morning must come from a habit of thought, such as coffee is the only thing that wakes me up. The thought then gently fades, and voila! Putting the coffee on first thing is now the habit of action.
Repeat
The famous Chef Thomas Keller often tells why he fell in love with cooking; he loved the repetition. He enjoyed doing the same work repeatedly every day, pushing himself to get better. Similarly, when a child learns a new word or song and sings it repeatedly, the rhythm and the vibrational patterning of the sounds become integrated into a knowingness, so they no longer need to think about repeating it.
